Working in collaboration with Nautilus, we supported the Malta National Aquarium at the point of its original opening. Our role focused on defining the visitor walkthrough and refining the spatial layout, helping translate the core exhibition and architectural ideas into a coherent and engaging visitor journey.
Our contribution centred on the creation of immersive themed environments that enhance and support this journey. Working at an early stage of the project, we helped shape spaces that extend beyond the enclosures themselves, using themed rockwork, environmental detailing, and spatial storytelling to immerse visitors in the landscapes of Malta and the wider Mediterranean.
Many areas were designed to reflect local habitats and subterranean environments, drawing inspiration from Malta’s geology, coastline, and historic urban fabric. This included realistic mural artwork, sculpted concrete rock textures, and architectural detailing influenced by the fortifications, cities, and landmarks found across the islands. Together, these layered theming elements create a strong sense of place, blending natural and cultural references to support learning while enriching the overall atmosphere and sense of discovery.
