Developed as part of Horizon Park’s vision to return RAF Scampton to public use, the Dambusters Museum builds on the site’s unique historical significance as the home of 617 Squadron. With original collections previously inaccessible or in storage, the project reimagines how this material can be presented through narrative-led design, replica aircraft, and digital storytelling. Central to the concept is the recreation of the planning and execution of Operation Chastise, allowing visitors to understand the human ingenuity, risk, and sacrifice behind the raid, while situating the story within the broader legacy of RAF Scampton and Bomber Command

Dambuster Museum
Project Overview
The Dambusters Museum is conceived as a flagship heritage attraction within the wider transformation of RAF Scampton into Horizon Park. Located in the historic Hangar 2, the museum focuses on the story of 617 Squadron and Operation Chastise, combining significant artefacts with immersive interpretation to bring one of the most iconic episodes of the Second World War to life. The concept balances commemoration, education, and contemporary visitor experience, positioning the museum as both a place of remembrance and a major cultural draw for the region
Introduction & Back Story
Project Legacy
The Dambusters Museum concept was instrumental in shaping the wider vision for Horizon Park, demonstrating how heritage, storytelling, and immersive design could drive a viable destination-led masterplan. The clarity and ambition of the proposal helped secure an initial £250,000 in seed funding, building early confidence in the scheme.
This foundation enabled the project to progress to full private backing, including investment from US partners, and positioned the museum as a key catalyst for the wider development. Its legacy lies in showing how a strong heritage-led concept can unlock funding, attract investment, and support the long-term regeneration potential of a complex historic site.
